Schumann Quartet

Yunah Chun is a junior in the pianist program at the Orange County School of the Arts, California. She started playing the piano at the age of 5 and is currently studying with Ms. Youngsook Park. Yunah has won top prizes in various competitions, such as the Southern California Junior Bach Festival (SCJBF): Complete Works Audition, Pelican International Music Competition, Charleston International Piano Competition, Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition, Barum International Music Competition, Concordia Keyboard Day Festival and Scholarship Competition, Southern Youth Music Festival, CAPMT Sonata Sonatina Competition and CAPMT Honors Competition. She also was awarded Panel Performance Honors at the MTAC State Convention Panel Master Class. Yunah has had the privilege of performing in masterclasses with world-renowned pianists, such as Greg Anderson, Dr. Sarkis Baltaian, and Nina Scolnik. Besides as a piano soloist, she enjoys collaborating with other instrumentalists in chamber groups, playing in piano duos, trios, and quartets. Aside from piano, Yunah enjoys reading, bullet journaling, and traveling.

Jiyu Lee, a 16-year-old violinist, is a sophomore at Orange County School of the Arts. Throughout her violin studies, she has expanded her musical horizon by performing solo and chamber music, as well as leading various orchestras as concertmaster. She has received first prize awards in numerous competitions, such as the American String Teachers Association Los Angeles branch, Los Angeles County division of the Music Teachers’ Association of California, AMICI Chamber & Solo Music Competitions, and the AVSOMC Concerto Competition. In the summer of 2023, Jiyu had an unforgettable experience performing at Carnegie Hall as concertmaster for NYO2 under the guidance of Maestro Joseph Young and James Ross. She currently studies violin with Dr. Hwieun Kim, who is the Chair of the Violin position at the newly formed Fried Music, and previously studied with Yuki Mori & Minjung Park, Dr. Jinhee Kim, and Park Yoonjae. As Jiyu progresses in her musical journey, she hopes to immerse herself in the art of performing the violin and captivate others with the charm of classical music. Recently, Jiyu has found inspiration in the world of pop and jazz, exploring new genres with the help of her guitar, violin, and looping machine. Apart from her musical pursuits, Jiyu’s hobbies include photography, collecting keychains, and walking her dog, Breezie.

Kara Wong is a 17-year-old who began piano at age six and viola at age thirteen under Sorah Myung and currently attends Orange County School of the Arts. This past summer, Kara trained with world-class musicians at the National Youth Orchestra 2 to perform at Carnegie Hall and the Dominican Republic National Theatre, and she joined the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra as Principal Violist to perform in the Czech Republic on their Europe Tour. Kara is also the Principal Violist of three years in her conservatory’s Symphony Orchestra, previous Principal of the Honors Performance Series Orchestra 2022 in Austria, and member of the CODA California All-State Orchestra 2023, SCSBOA All-Southern Orchestra 2021, and TUSD Honor Orchestra 2019-20.

In 2022, Kara debuted at Carnegie Hall after winning second place in the American Protégé International Competition for piano. Most recently, she won first place in the 19th Century Charleston International Competition 2023 on piano, second place on viola, and, in the past, first in the Musical Arts Competition of Orange County 2022 and Satori Summer Music Festival All-Qualified 2021. An enthusiast for chamber music, Kara plays viola with Junior Chamber Music and the Pacific Symphony Youth Quartet and Octet. In 2021-22, she was part of Chamber Music of Orange County Pre-College, where she had masterclasses with Peter Zazofsky and the Kronos Quartet. Some of her past teachers include Ji-Yeon Lee and Chika Wie.

Seventeen year old cellist Ashley Ryoo was born and raised in Orange County, California. She began her musical studies at the age of two on the violin, then began her cello studies at the age of six. Currently, Ashley studies under the tutelage of Mr. Clive Greensmith. Ashley has played in ensembles at the Colburn School and Junior Chamber Music. She has also been a member of the Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles. Her chamber music groups have been named prizewinners in numerous competitions, leading to various performance opportunities, most recently performing with the DaCamera Society. Currently, Ashley is a member of the cello section in the American Youth Symphony.

In past summers, Ashley studied with Hans Jørgen Jensen at the Meadowmount School of Music and Ko Iwasaki at the Montecito International Music Festival. Ashley also has been invited to perform in masterclasses in festivals such as La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest and Cello Fresno. Ashley has performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Bellflower Symphony Orchestra, the South Coast Symphony, the Korean American Youth Symphony, and California State University, Fullerton’s chamber orchestra. She has won numerous prizes in competitions such as the South Coast Symphony’s Young Stars of the Future competition, Southern California Philharmonic’s Young Artist Competition, Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra’s Gail Newby Competition, and the Bellflower Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Concerto Competition. Ashley has also performed in venues such as the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall.
