Phillip Triggs
Phillip Triggs is currently Assistant Principal Viola of Santa Barbara Symphony, a section member of New West Symphony, and frequently performs with Pacific Symphony as a substitute. Recently, Phillip has performed with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as guest associate principal and as a section substitute with the Las Vegas Philharmonic. He has also performed with the viola sections of Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Opera Pacific, Northwest Indiana Symphony, New Millenium Orchestra of Chicago, and as guest principal with the Riverside County Philharmonic and Golden State Pops Orchestra. In the pit, he has performed with numerous visiting ballet companies at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Orange County Performing Arts Center, including the San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Bolshoi Ballet. He has also worked as a recording artist for film, television, and video games.
He earned his M.M. in Viola Performance from Northwestern University where he served as co-principal of the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, and his B.M. in Viola Performance from Chapman University where he served as principal of the Orchestras for four years. Phillip's summers have been spent at the Aspen Music Festival and School, Viola Workout in Crested Butte, ChamberArtsFest, and the San Diego Chamber Music Workshop. His teachers have included such world renowned pedagogues as Roland Vamos, Jeffrey Irvine, James Dunham, Robert Becker, and William Fitzpatrick.
A passionate educator, Mr. Triggs encourages his students to find musical solutions to technical problems so improvement is as enjoyable as it is consistent. He has coached the violin and viola sections of Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra, Community Youth Orchestra of Southern California, and coached chamber ensembles at the Capistrano International Chamber Music Festival. Mr. Triggs has also adjudicated auditions and concerto competitions for OCYSO and Chapman University. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Viola at Concordia University in Irvine and Santa Ana College; and teaches viola master class and chamber music at Orange County School of the Arts. He also maintains a small private studio at his home in Mission Viejo, where he lives with his wife and son.
