JCM-IE Superstars

Joshua Kim (16) began playing the violin at the age of six. He is a sophomore at Diamond Bar High School and has received awards for his playing, including recognition from CalASTA, MTAC VOCE, the Satori Music Festival, and the SoCalPhil Concerto Competition.

Joshua is also an active participant in several orchestras, including the CASMEC All State, SCSBOA All Southern, as well as the Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra. He is also a frequent performer in his school's Performing Arts Academy chamber music program. He is currently studying with acclaimed violin teacher Linda Rose.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Joshua is an enthusiastic volunteer who particularly enjoys befriending and spending time with youths with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), and performing for senior citizens.

As composers, Emily and Kaitlin have studied privately under recognized composers Ian Krouse, Derrick Skye, and Juan Pablo Contreras. They have premiered numerous compositions with organizations including Salastina, the LA Phil Composer Fellowship Program, Sunset ChamberFest, and Mount Saint Mary’s University, and also enjoy composing music for short films.

Joseph Ho (17) is an eighth year cellist and a junior at the Orange County School of the Arts in the Strings and Orchestra Conservatory. He is currently studying under professor Joon Sung Jun. For his playing, he has received awards in competitions including the Satori Strings Summer Music Festival, Pelican International Music Competition, and Musical Arts Competition. He has been in numerous orchestral groups and ensembles throughout his musical career, including Norwalk Youth Symphony, Orange County County Cello Ensemble, CSUSB Cello Ensemble and JCM. He has performed live on public radio and has contributed to a CD production of a Christmas Cello Album. Last summer, he travelled on the JCM Honors Tour to Germany where he performed and received instruction. He is looking forward to the upcoming Honors Tour in Italy.

Joseph has received Congressional recognition for his role in serving the community and bringing people together through music. Recently, he transposed music for and performed in a benefit concert for those affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. In the future, he hopes to continue to advance his musical knowledge and raise awareness for social issues.

In his free time, Joseph enjoys playing chess, traveling, playing piano, and composing and arranging various types of music.

Yoojin Jo is currently a senior at the Orange County School of the Arts in the Instrumental Music Piano Conservatory. She has been studying the piano for 13 years under Dr. Kookhee Hong and has been an active chamber musician for five years. Yoojin has won several music awards and honors throughout her musical career, some including Bronze Medalist in the Grand Final Round and 1st Place in the Final Round of the Piano League Piano Star International Competition, Silver Award in the Finland International Piano Competition, and 1st Place in the MTAC Theme Festival. She has also performed at Carnegie Hall two times. Yoojin is particularly passionate about chamber music and the idea of sharing music with other fellow musicians as well as with the rest of the world. Last summer, she was invited to participate in Junior Chamber Music’s Honors Tour in Germany, and she’s excited for the Honors Tour in Italy this upcoming summer. Beyond music, Yoojin is a competitive recurve archer and enjoys watching Korean films and discovering new foods during her free time.

Elliot Kim (17) is a current senior at Valencia High School studying under Prof. Leslie Ho. He started playing the viola in 5th grade and has been involved in many music activities in school, community service, and competitions. Some notable achievements include receiving his American String Teachers Association (ASTA) level 10 certification with honors, playing a solo concerto with his youth orchestra, and being a finalist in the ASTA LA branch Concerto competition. Elliot is also the principal violist of the highest level orchestra at Valencia, as well as the Orange County Community Youth Orchestra. He created “Quarantet” during the COVID-19 pandemic, a music ensemble that gave over 50 performances in senior homes and various venues after creation. Elliot has also participated in several chamber music groups through programs like the Chamber Music Institute and Junior Chamber Music, where he was invited to JCM’s tour in Italy this summer.
