Dr. Henry Chen

Described by Spanish Public Media as a "cellist with high poetic expression in both virtuosity and musicality," Taiwanese-American cellist Dr. Henry Chen is renowned for his expressive performances and technical mastery. He has appeared in some of the world’s most prestigious venues across Asia, Europe, and North America. Throughout his career, Dr. Chen has collaborated with esteemed musicians such as Alan Chow, Joseph Silverstein, Ida and Ani Kavafian, Shmuel Ashkenasi, and many others. His recent debut performances at Taiwan’s Taichung National Theatre and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts were met with enthusiastic acclaim.

Beyond the concert stage, Dr. Chen is passionate about teaching and helping young musicians reach their full potential. He currently serves as a fine arts coach at Claremont High School and Suzanne Middle School. Additionally, he is frequently invited by Youth Orchestra Los Angeles to mentor young musicians. His students have gone on to win national competitions and perform with leading youth orchestras in Southern California, Chicago, and the Boston area.

Dr. Chen began playing the cello at the age of 13. He received his Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music and his Master of Music from Northwestern University. In 2023, he completed his Doctor of Musical Arts at Northwestern University, where he also served as a teaching assistant in the String Department. His mentors, Hans Jensen, Steven Doane, and Ronald Leonard, have all played a significant role in shaping his musical journey. Dr. Chen currently performs on a rare 1780 William Forster cello.
