Baloo Quartet

Jason Chen, 17, started playing violin at the age of 8 and is currently with Jiyoung An. He has been a continuous member of California All State Honor Orchestra and the California All Southern Honor Orchestra and currently concertmaster in Glendale Youth Orchestra. Jason received top prizes in various competitions, including the US New Star International Competition, the Great Composer Competition, the Medici International Music Competition, the Satori Strings Competition, the Southwestern Youth Music Festival, MTAC Scholarship Competition, MTAC VOCE Competition, Beethoven Young Musician International Competition and Tiziano Rosetti International Competition. He made his concerto debut at the age of 15, performing the Bruch violin concerto with the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra. Jason also serves as a board member of Junior Chamber Music Student Service Alliance, where he gives back to the community and performs at senior homes and for various music charity events.

Valerie Chen, 16 years old, started playing the violin when she was 8. She currently studies with JiYoung An and has had the opportunity to work with world-renown musicians Movses Pogossian, Sean Lee and Radim Sedmidubsky. She also has been awarded top prizes in the LANSUM international competition, the U.S. New Star International Competition, the Medici International Music Competition, the Southwestern Youth Music Festival, the Antelope Valley Bach Competition, the Great Composer Competition, the MTAC VOCE competition, and Mt. St. Mary High School Solo Competition. Valerie was the Gold Medalist of the Southern California Junior Bach Complete Work Competition and also received a scholarship from the Friends of William Grant Still Arts Center. She made her concerto debut at the age of 14, performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra and is an active member of the Glendale Youth Orchestra. In her free time, Valerie likes to read, draw and play with her dog.

Nathan Schick (15) is a sophomore at Crescenta Valley High School. He started playing viola at age 12 and is currently studying with Ms. Emily Gregg. He is in his third year with JCM. He is also a member of Glendale Youth Orchestra for the past three years. At CVHS, he is the viola section leader of the Symphony Orchestra, and plays bass drum in the marching band. He started playing piano at age 6 and still enjoys playing it for fun.

Sebastian Quadrini has been playing cello since he was eleven years old starting with his school instrumental program. He has come to be involved in the Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra and various other music groups situated in Claremont. He currently takes lessons with Maggie Parkins PhD. Along with cello, Sebastian is a distinguished pianist who has a handful of honors and recognitions. He has competed and won multiple competitions and has participated in the Todi International Music Masters piano festival. Sebastian loves to engage in tomfoolery with his friends and enjoys watching avant-garde movies with his girlfriend. On his weekends, he also competes in the highly competitive Southern California Premier Soccer league and dabbles in the culinary arts. This summer he plans on attending the JCM Italy tour and also furthering his pizza making skills.
